The pace of growth of overweights and obesity is faster than the World average growth of Obesity.
Over Accumulation of fat within the body has become a progressive and complex issue of individuals across the world.
The purpose of this article is to spread awareness about how the health of future India might look like and not hurt the sentiments of particular body type. Obese and Overweight individuals are highly susceptible to Chronic Disease, Malfunctioning of the Heart, Diabetes etc.
And yes, Obesity is preventable.
Here in this article, I will be sharing my views and analysis on the topic.
Before diving into my views, Let's see what others research and analysis has to convey. Understanding their views and opinions do matter as it will help us come to an appropriate conclusion.
One of the articles by Economic Times published on 14 July 2020 has mentioned,
"The number of adults (18 years and older) who are obese grew from 25.2 million in 2012 to 34.3 million in 2016, growing from 3.1 per cent to 3.9 per cent.
The number of women of reproductive age (15-49) affected by anaemia grew from 165.6 million in 2012 to 175.6 million in 2016."
These sentences might seem to contradict each other.
Yet the inference of these sentences is that despite being Overweight or Obese these individual lacks some of the essential micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).
More Food doesn't necessarily mean More Nutrition.
The article, "Forecasting the prevalence of overweight and obesity in India to 2040" published by a group of researchers which included Indians as well mentioned the Following:
" The prevalence of overweight will more than double among Indian adults aged 20–69 years between 2010 and 2040, while the prevalence of obesity will triple. Specifically, the prevalence of overweight and obesity will reach 30.5% (27.4%-34.4%) and 9.5% (5.4%-13.3%) among men, and 27.4% (24.5%-30.6%) and 13.9% (10.1%-16.9%) among women, respectively, by 2040. The largest increases in the prevalence of overweight and obesity between 2010 and 2040 is expected to be in older ages, and we found a larger relative increase in overweight and obesity in rural areas compared to urban areas. The largest relative increase in overweight and obesity prevalence was forecast to occur at older age groups."
Women are most susceptible to being Obese as compared to men while men are highly susceptible to being Overweight as compared to women.
"Despite this, few studies have attempted to estimate future trends in overweight and obesity in India. One study that reports on global trends estimated that 27.8% of all Indians would be overweight, and 5.0% obese, by 2030. Another study estimated that around 20% of rural Indian adults will be either overweight or obese by 2030."
"The prevalence of overweight and obesity in India is increasing faster than the world average. For instance, the prevalence of overweight increased from 8.4% to 15.5% among women between 1998 and 2015, and the prevalence of obesity increased from 2.2% to 5.1% over the same period."
We had enough discussion about overweight and obesity in adults.
What about Children? Arent they susceptible?.
The answer is an unpropitious, Yes!
"Health Effects of Overweight and Obesity in 195 Countries over 25 Years" published in The New England Journal of Medicine mentioned :
"In 2015, China and India had the highest numbers of obese children, whereas the United States and China had the highest numbers of obese adults."
Another publication, Obesity in School Children in India by By Vangal Krishnaswamy Sashindran and Puja Dudeja published on 30th January 2020 mentioned:
"The prevalence of obesity among 5- to 19-year-old Indian children, ranged between 3.6 and 11.7%. It is predicted that by 2025 there will be 17 million obese children in India. Urbanisation is the single most important factor linked to obesity in India. Epigenetic, dietary, familial, psychosocial, parental education and parental occupation are other important factors. About 50% of obese children will become obese adults. The prevalence of hypertension, type 2 diabetes dyslipidaemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in children is also increasing parallelly. Prevention of childhood obesity is vital because it is near impossible to get children to lose weight and maintain it."
The Judgment out of the 2015 data was that India has the second-highest child obesity rate in the year. Horrifying, isn't it?
What could be the potential causes of this situation?
Some of the likely causes of overweight/obesity are:
High intake of Dense Food rich in fats, sugar, sodium and, other unwanted and unnecessary proportion of macro Nutrient.
Physical Inactivity which is due to Sedentary Lifestyle.
